PENANG: Famous Kueh Teow Th'ng

I was with a bunch of my relatives, hunting for breakfast - and was told this is an execellent spot to dig in for an awesome breakfast.

This is another popular spots, catering more for the locals, so the prices are just right and the authenticity of the dish is more than just well preserved. This places sells good Kuey Teow Soup dishes, whether its Tomyam, some black soup thingy or herbal duck soup.

This place is actually near Chow Rasta, right opposite the police station, not hard to find actually.
Great breakfast, we had variety of food, even an additional Durian D24, simply the best hahaha. The herbal soup was quite good, u can actually have it in options of chicken or duck. Strong herbal soup...

There are also good Fried Kuey Teow, simply delicious, Kuey Chap - actually something like kuey teow but in small 3 x 3cm sizing s. This is serve in some kind of black color soup with eggs, intestines, tongue etc etc.

All the dishes comes about RM3.50 each. Goes beautifully with a nice cup of hot coffee. There are also vendors near by selling Karipap and also fried Veg crackers with seaweed, thats good, about RM3.50 a packet.

PENANG: Gurney Drive

Gurney Drive, otherwise known as Persiaran Gurney, is perhaps one of the most well-known places in Penang. Often referred to as ‘The New Esplanade’ (to differentiate it from the original Esplanade in George Town), Gurney Drive is a deluge of hawker delights and exciting restaurants that come alive at nighttime, giving the unique experience of dining by the sea. Gurney Drive was named after Sir Henry Gurney, a Malayan High Commissioner who was assassinated by the guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Emergency period in the early 1950s.

Gurney Drive was named after Sir Henry Gurney, High Commissioner of Malaya (1950-1951), who was assassinated by the guerillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Malayan Emergency.

According to his wife who was with him at the time, he sacrificed himself to the communist regime in order to protect the lives of his wife and the driver.
Although his tenure in Malaya is very short, his contributions and effort to the Malayans will never be forgotten. His contributions includes established the Advanced Approved School and the Henry Gurney School in various parts of the Malay States.

Today, Penang Gurney Drive is considered the best vantage point for sunset on the island this coastline stretch that is popular time-out spot for families and lovers, just outside the historical city of Georgetown.

With stretch of road that fronting the sea and long walls to keep the waves at bay, Gurney Drive is the favorite place when it comes to good food. Hawker food stalls have mushroomed over the years as patrons liked the idea of eating whilst listening to the crashing of waves.

Since then, it has become synonymous with good food at cheap prices, drawing both residents and visitors in droves every night.

If you haven't tried it out, the most sought after Penang food at the moment must be the Penang Fried Kuey Teow, a flat rice noodles with crunchy bean sprouts, cockles and prawns fried in a deep heated wok. There is a lot of stall at Gurney Drive that sells this signature dish. The aromatic Penang Asam Laksa is another favorite dish here. The stalls are easily recognizable as they are usually the most crowded. Others delicious food includes Penang Rojak, Passembur, Chendol, Poh Piah, Curry Noodles, Nasi Kandar, Satay and many more.

One of my favorite will be Penang variant of Lok-Lok - The steamboat look-alike which requires one to select delicious skewered seafood and scald it in boiling water and then dunk again into a large bowl of sauce (spicy and non-spicy) before finally savoring it. It makes my mouth drools every time I think of it.

On weekend nights, Penang Gurney Drive is more than a watering hole for the hungry Penang folk. Many young Penangites, donned in trendy wear, often make this place the first stop before hitting Penang popular nightspots. There will be also many shoppers from the nearby shopping malls comes over to fill up their hungry stomach after doing some serious shopping. And if you like to buy cheap CDs, VCDs or DVDs, you can get it here too.

The stalls here operate from about 6.00pm to 1.00am daily.

Cons to me: Long queues at popular stalls, paper plates, hot as there is no fan (open air), crowded.

PENANG: Penang Famous Cendul Street

When i was up in Penang i was told about this place, Penang Famous Cendul Street. However there are few shops here selling the same thing, but u will noticed only one stall, The queue is extra long, up to the streets. I have always believe this, when the queue is long u know the food is good, hahaha.

Located in Chow Rasta, its a shopping spot for tourist as they sell traditional Penang stuffs. Just take a turn to Lebuh Keng Kwee, u will find this street. The Cendul cost about RM1.90 a bowl.

Well, it just looks like any ordinary cendol. It contains the usual cendol jelly, santan, brown sugar and kidney beans. And of course crushed ice. With me being a foreigner to Penang - i would say that its rather OK - Not drop dead good, had better ones in Melaka (Cendul with authentic Gula Melaka). I have to say that it is quite good. I feel that its quality is inconsistent, but that could be due to factors such as weather and my thirst the time I eat it. The ingredients they use are quite fresh. I would recommend it to visitors to Penang to try it out.
Besides cendol, they have Ais Kacang (ABC) which is pretty good as well. It contains crushed ice, the usual colouring and flavouring (syrup, evaporated milk), corn, "cin cau", some type of green jelly, and of course red kidney beans (kacang).

How to get there: It is located on Lebuh Keng Kwee, off Penang Road. It is a walking distance from Komtar and Prangin Mall. The landmark I can describe best is the 5-branch overhead pedestrian bridge. If you can't find it, just ask anyone and I'm sure they can point you right to it. Parking can be a little bit difficult. I suggest that you find any parking spot along Penang Road or near Komtar and walk.

If Phua Chu Kang had been here, u would want to be here.... hahaha.

PENANG: Teluk Kumbar Sea Food

Before i even start off, "Breath-taking". This is a beach located in some north corner of the Penang Island, i was here in Penang for my cousins wedding when i purposefully hunt down this place to have a blasting great dinner with all my relatives... Superb place, if ur a fan of seafood - this is ur heaven... taste so good!! that u need not burn ur pockets.

This restaurant with its quiet and pleasant location also has a good picturesque sunset view off Gertak Sanggul. The dinning area of the restaurant is extended right on the beach.  A stroll down the beach was very relaxing while waiting for the food.

A beautiful beach side, come around 530-700 pm, and enjoy ur dinner with the sunset, too bad when i arrived the sun is already down hahaha... Aint that easy to lacte this area actually, U might need ur GPS.
Its an open air restaurant, coolen by the breeze at night blowing from the sea, with the nice sound of the sea water hitting the shores. Hawker stall style table setting, nothing fancy, Plastic chairs and tables - nicely above ur sandy floor.

We ordered several seafood dishes, starting off with Satay (not ur regular satay as u can see)

Crabs - freshly grilled with with garlic and Fried butter style
Fishes - Steamed with a nice broth and friend with some sweet sauce
Crustaceans - Oysters, clams, lala, Lo-Kang, etc
Prawns - Butter prawns, char grilled etc

And it was nicely complimented with a nice cold glass of beer. The Satay here is grilled with the sauce already on, but its not just the peanut sauce we usually dips in. Some how the dish ends up to be little spicy with some tinge of sweetness, its just Fantastic. Its cost about 80 cents per stick, i guess its reasonable, good portion and size with a fantastic taste, aint those "retarded ones from Pasar Malam" hahaha.

I truly enjoyed the dinner. Get the telephone number to make a reservation at this seaside restaurant especially on the weekend and public holidays.

Singapore: Food Rebublic Vivo City

As i was pondering to locate my transport back to Malaysia, i stumbled onto this place, at my first impression it was just another Malaysian food place nicely commercialized for us consumers to go.

VivoCity is the largest shopping mall in Singapore. Located in the Harbour Front precinct, it was designed by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito. Its name is derived from the word Vivacity. According to Mapletree Chairman Edmund Cheng, VivoCity "evokes a lifestyle experience that is modern, stimulating and accessible to everyone, a place bubbling with energy and flowing with vitality". At the end of the first week after its official opening on 1 December 2006, the mall had recorded nearly a million visitors.

There are two giant Food court — a 2,200 square metre Kopitiam Group facility in Basement 2 and another spread over 2,500 square metres run by the BreakTalk group, which is a Food Republic food court in similar concept at its sister food court at Wisma Atria.

I Headed out there and tried this bowl of dried spicy noodle with a side dish soup. to me the pricing was fair to Singaporeans but kinda pricey to us malaysian, I had this bowl of noodles for S$8 with S$2.80 for a cup of Barley Lime Juice, of course for us malaysian, we have better food for a way better price, but nothing to blame - its the currency exchange hahaha... The noodles was immaculate, right amount of every spices and ingredient. Kinda a must try food in this place.

KL: Uma Rani Indian Restaurant

Located in some deep end of Jalan Ipoh, stands this nice corner lot restaurant "Uma Rani Indian Food Restaurant". This is one place that will not fail in providing u real authentic indian cuisine. Lunch time from work, where things are stable and "walk-out-able".... i head to this little famous Indian heaven. Hungry hungry!!!

Restoran Uma Rani Is a fully owned family restaurant spearheaded by the family’s matriarch, Mr. K Ramalingam.
It was first established in the year 2000 and initially started off as a small establishment operating from just the ground floor of a tow storey shop lot situated along jalan ipoh, Kuala Lumpur.
The restaurant now boasts of a substantial increase in space with the recent occupation of the second floor of the same shop lot.
It is fully operational 24-hour restaurant with the workforce of 15 staff per shift to cater to the needs of the continuous stream of regular and new patrons.

Hugely wide variety of choices u can make. There is also a small session for the Vegans to peck their grains.... Sorry to say, for those grass grazers, such a waste not to go the other way here.... its a huge lost!!! Food was awesome!! Dead awesome....

There are the typical Indian varieties, banana leaves, Briyani rice (Which by the way - awesome!!!), also the usual, Hot pan Roti's... Roti Canai of various proportions and types.... tissue, sardin, onion.... etc etc etc....
Mee Goreng and specially ordered dishes are also available - Many in choices....

Craving for some fresh fried meat and seafood, u may, just pick out ur likings and pass it over to the staff to fry them for ya....

And also its fairly priced here, for what u pay, its worth every penny. I usually have my lunch about 10-12 ringgit inclusive of a drink...

My favourites the Chicken and Mutton Varevals!!! u will come back for seconds..... The fish cutlet is also delicious and tasty with a weord twist, aint the typical one u see all the time.

For drink i did tries something called "Moru", i hope thats how its spelled hahaha. its like fermemted yogurt water with onions, pumpkin seed, other spices and chilies... freaking weird combination... Does it taste good? hmmmm lets just say its an acquired taste.

KL: Kudu Nasi Kandar

Working Night shift renders me craving for a good dinner. Located at a quite point at the corner of some shop lots, presence this little Nasi Kandar shop.
Opens daily form Morning till Evening, 10 am till 730 pm.
This place is packed during Ranmadhan.

Nasi Kandar is a popular northern Malaysian dish, which originates from Penang. It is a meal of steamed rice which can be plain or mildly flavored, and served with a variety of curries and side dishes.
The word Nasi Kandar, came about from a time when nasi [rice] hawkers or vendors would kandar [balance] a pole on the shoulder with two huge containers of rice meals. The name has remained and today the word Nasi Kandar is seen on most Tamil Muslim or "Malaysian Mamak" restaurants and Indian-Muslim stall meals.

The rice for a nasi kandar dish is often placed in a wooden container about three feet high, giving it a distinctive aroma. The rice is accompanied by side dishes such as fried chicken, curried spleen, cubed beef, fish roe, fried prawns or fried squid. The vegetable dish would usually be brinjal, lady fingers or "bendi" or bitter gourd. A mixture of curry sauces is poured on the rice. This is called 'banjir' (flooding) and imparts a diverse taste to the rice.

Awesome - Just some white rice flooded with all kinds of curry, Crab, Chicken, Mutton, Fish, Fish egg... etc etc. Just Rojak of all curries - sounds discusting - suprisingly awesome!!

This shop had been opened by this lovely couple from Pakistan for 43 year..... 43 years!!!! My mum was just 10 years old hahaha...

Had an awesome dinner that day.

The Black stuff - Mutton curry is a must try dish - hard like rock but somehow fits here hahaha.
